The dataset is converted to file geodatabase (FGDB) format using tools in ArcGIS. The geometry is checked, and if needed repaired.
After processing, the dataset is checked for drawing display and number of records and file sizes compared with source materials.
The positional accuracy of TIGER/Line varies with the source materials used. The Census Bureau cannot specify the accuracy of features changed or added by its field staff or through local updates, features derived from the GBF/DIME Files, or other sources. Thus, the level of positional accuracy in the TIGER/Line shapefiles makes them unsuitable for high-precision measurement applications such as engineering problems, property transfers, or other uses that might require highly accurate measurements of the earth's surface.

The following steps were performed by Esri: Extracted the datasets from Census TIGER/Line Shapefiles and merged them into a nationwide file geodatabase. Projected the dataset to WGS 1984. Clipped the dataset to the coastline with Data and Maps 2019 U.S. States. Added the fields CLASS, ST, STFIPS, and PLACEFIPS with values from the Census TIGER/Line Shapefiles fields. Removed and renamed fields. Added the field POPULATION (alias POP2018). Added the field POP_CLASS (based on POPULATION) and recalculated it with the same range breaks. Added the field SQMI and calculated its values projected to North America Albers Equal Area Conic. Added and calculated the field POP_SQMI (alias POP18_SQMI).
